NBA Scores: LeBron James Scores 31 but Washington Wizards Halt Cleveland Cavaliers Win Streak at 13

Caron Butler scored 25 points, Brendan Haywood added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Gilbert Arenas finished with 11 points and 10 assists as the Washington Wizards (18-59) overcame a 31 point, 9 rebound night from LeBron James and knocked off the Cleveland Cavaliers (61-14) 109-101 on Thursday night.

Cleveland started hot as they jumped to a 13-4 lead in the opening minutes but the Wizards fought back and used a 12-2 run to grab the lead 16-15 and closed the frame with a 22-19 advantage. The Cavs stayed close in the second and managed to even the score at 32-32 with 4:33 left in the half but the Wizards closed strong and carried a 49-41 lead into the break.

Washington’s hot shooting carried over into the third quarter as they quickly built a 13 point lead and while Cleveland was able to get to within eight the Wizards took a comfortable 80-70 lead into the fourth. That comfortable advantage disappeared in a matter of minutes though as the Cavs tied the game at 86-86 after a Wally Szczerbiak buried triple but the Wizards wouldn’t fold and pushed their advantage back to nine points with three minutes left in the game. Cleveland climbed back to within four but Washington wouldn’t let them get any closer and held on for the upset.

While the Cavaliers hit 11-30 from beyond the three-point line and the Wizards were just 1-10 from the same distance the difference in the game came down to the free-throw line where Washington was 26-30 from the stripe while Cleveland was 12-17.
