The
United Nations has formed a four-member fact-finding team whose mission will be
to investigate alleged violations committed during the most recent conflict
between Israelis and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Richard
Goldstone, a South African judge and former war crimes prosecutor, will head the
mission formed by the UN Human Rights Council. The team is expected to
investigate “all violations of international law” tied to that Gaza Strip
conflict which ended on January 18.
Palestinians
have claimed Israel violated international law during their campaign in the Gaza
Strip which left nearly 1,500 dead, many of them civilians. Israel has dispute the
number of deaths, claiming about 1,100 were killed, the majority being
militants.
There
have been numerous claims that Israel carried out indiscriminate attacks during
the campaign, often targeting areas with large civilian populations yet the Israeli
military has said they acted in accordance to the rules of warfare under
international law.
The
fact-finding mission is expected to begin within weeks
