NCAA Final Four Scores: Michigan State Spartans Stun Connecticut Huskies to Advance to National Championship Game

Kalin Lucas scored 21 points and dished out 5 assists, Raymar Morgan added 18 points and 9 rebounds and Durrell Summers finished with 10 points and 6 boards to lift the Michigan State Spartans to an 82-73 win over the Connecticut Huskies and advance to the national championship game to be played in Detroit on Monday.

The Spartans started hot, jumping to a quick 9-2 advantage with a series of perimeter buckets but the Huskies regrouped and a 14-5 run capped by a Kemba Walker layup gave UConn their first lead at 16-14. The Huskies stretched their lead to five but the Spartans wouldn’t let the game get out of hand and when UConn went cold from the field Michigan State made their move with an 11-2 run to take a 36-31 lead before settling with a38-36 halftime advantage.

Connecticut scored the first six points of the second half to take a four point lead and over the next five minutes the game went back and forth until the Spartans used a 6-0 spurt to grab the lead 53-49 and they wouldn’t trail again. The Huskies stayed close but the Spartans got some breathing room with another six straight points to move in front by ten with seven minutes left in the game.

A.J. Price tried to pull the Huskies back and cut his team’s deficit to 66-60 with 4:12 left in the game but Kalin Lucas buried a triple and then Raymond Morgan finished a steal with a dunk and the Spartans had their biggest lead at 71-60 with under three minutes left.

The Huskies wouldn’t go away though and climbed back to within 74-71 with 1:08 on the clock but a three-point play from Durrell Summers pushed the advantage back to six and the Spartans managed to hit their free-throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Michigan State will now face the winner of the North Carolina Tar Heels and Villanova Wildcats in the national championship game on Monday night.
