U.S. and South Korea Say North Korean Rocket Launch Failed to Place Satellite into Space

Despite claims from North Korea that their rocket launch on Sunday was successful the United States and South Korea have both dismissed those reports declaring the launch failed to place a satellite into space.

According to the U.S. Northern Command the North Koreans launched a three-stage Taepodong-2 missile. Stage one of that missile fell into the Sea of Japan while the remaining two stages and its payload fell into the Pacific Ocean.

It was further determined that no object entered orbit, contradicting reports made by North Korea which stated the satellite was in orbit and transmitting data.

The controversial rocket launch was once again condemned by the international community and U.S. President Barack Obama commented on the action saying, “North Korea broke the rules once more by testing a rocket that could be used for a long-range missile.” He continued, “This provocation underscores the need for action - not just this afternoon at the UN Security Council, but in our determination to prevent the spread of these weapons.”

The United States, Japan and South Korea have strongly criticized the rocket launch and claim North Korea’s actions were a direct violation of Security Council resolution 1718 that was adopted in Oct. 2006. That resolution bans North Korea from carrying out ballistic missile activity.
