The 2009 major league baseball season opens on Sunday night the 2008 World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies hosting the Atlanta Braves at 8:00 p.m.
With lefty Cole Hamels still nursing a sore elbow the Phillies are going with Brett Myers as their opening day starter. Myers is coming off a 10-13 campaign in which he posted a 7-5 record at home, two of those losses were to Atlanta.
The Braves will counter with their big offseason pickup Derek Lowe who came over to Atlanta after a 14-11 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lowe was 5-6 on the road last year and only faced the Phillies once in the regular season, a home win in L.A. The right-hander faced the Phillies twice in the NLCS last year, both games Philly won.
While the Phillies lost Pat Burrell to free agency they open 2009 with a potent offense that includes Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Ryan Howard and Chase Utley as well as newcomer Raul Ibanez. Philadelphia will certainly by relying on a healthy Hamels but will be hoping Myers, Jamie Moyer and
Atlanta heads into 2009 with plenty of questions, chief among them is their pitching staff which includes new-comer Lowe as well as Javier Vazquez and Japanese import Kenshin Kawakami. With both Tom Glavine and Tim Hudson opening the season on the DL there will be plenty of pressure on the three new arms. The Braves brought in Garrett Anderson as a new bat to help Chipper Jones and Brian McCann with the offensive load but if they could get could things out of Casey Kotchman, Yunel Escobar, Kelly Johnson and Jeff Francoeur they may be alright.
