Earthquake in L’Aquila, Italy Leaves 50 Dead, Thousands Homeless

A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit central Italy Monday morning, killed at least 50 people and leaving thousands homeless. Officials expect the death toll to rise as rescuers are digging through rubble looking for survivors and bodies.

The quake hit near the historic college city of L’Aquila, the capital of the Abruzzo region. L’Aquila is located about 60 miles north of Rome. Many historic buildings, some of them dating back to the 13th century, were destroyed.

Three aftershocks, ranging from 4.3 to 4.8, followed.

Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi canceled a trip to Moscow and planned to visit the affected area. He declared a state of emergency.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who is currently visiting Turkey, released a statement expressing his condolences to the families of those killed in the earthquake. “We want to send our condolences to the families there and hope we are able to get rescue teams in and minimize the damage as much as possible,” he said.

The earthquake followed several hours after a 4.6 magnitude struck northern Italy.
