A
6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck the central town of L’Aquila in Italy,
killing at least 90 people and injuring more than 1,500 with those numbers
expected to rise significantly.
Rescue
workers continue to dig through the buildings and homes that collapsed as the quake
struck around 3:30 a.m. local time.
Already
officials are saying 30,000-40,000 people have been left homeless while
hospitals have been overrun with the injured.
While
L’Aquila, about 60 miles northeast of Rome, was said to be the epicenter
Italian officials have said several surrounding towns have been wiped out.
Those towns included Castelnuovo, Fossa, Poggio Picenze, Tormintarte, Totani
and Villa Sant’Angelo.
