The
path to the South African presidency appears to have been cleared for African
National Congress leader Jacob Zuma after prosecutors announced they would drop
corruption charges after finding evidence that suggested political interference
may have played a role in the case.
According
to the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) the decision to drop the charges
was made following the discovery of recorded phone conversations that suggested
the charges filed against Zuma had been manipulated.
The
NPA released a statement following the decision to drop the charges, “It is a
difficult decision because the NPA has expended considerable resources on this
matter, and it has been conducted by a committed and dedicated team of
prosecutors and investigators who have handled a difficult case with utmost
professionalism and who have not been implicated in any misconduct.”
Zuma
stood accused of several counts of corruption tied to a multi-million dollar
arms deal in 1999. He has denied any wrongdoing in the incident and has long
argued that the charges were politically motivated.
In
Dec. 2007 Zuma was elected leader of the ANC, unseating South African President
Thabo Mbeki as the party’s head. Zuma is expected to become president following
the April 22 general elctions.
