At the beginning of the college basketball season the North Carolina Tar Heels were a favorite to reach to national championship game as they topped the AP and ESPN Top 25 while the Michigan State Spartans flew under the radar, but still grabbed attention at #6 and #7 respectively.
While the Tar Heels remained in the nation’s elite the Spartans took a sudden tumble after falling to Maryland and then getting drubbed by UNC 98-63. North Carolina stayed consistent throughout their season and while they dropped their first two games inside the ACC they regrouped and won the regular season conference title.
Following their loss to the Tar Heels the Spartans won eleven in a row but never really commanded the respect that teams from the Big East, ACC or even the Big 12 were receiving. Playing in what many called a weak Big Ten the Spartans quietly positioned themselves for an NCAA tournament run and when March Madness began they were ready.
The Spartans have relied heavily on a comprehensive effort as they have no big star but rather a unit that plays well under Tom Izzo. Led by Kalin Lucas at the point, the Spartans have had consistent play from Goran Suton, Durrell Summers as well as Raymar Morgan to reach the national championship game. Michigan State had no problems against Robert Morris in the first round but had to fight past USC in the second round before doing just enough to get by Kansas in the Sweet 16 and then they handled Louisville in the Elite Eight. They then shocked UConn in the Final Four, their second #1 victim and now they have a shot at their third #1-seed in UNC.
North Carolina hasn’t really been challenged in their run to the national title game as they crushed Radford in their opener and then beat LSU in the round of 32, a game that marked the return of Ty Lawson. The Tar Heels then blew out Gonzaga in the Sweet 16, had no problems with Oklahoma in the Elite Eight and then really cruised past Villanova in the Final Four. While Lawson is the leader of the Tar Heels they have plenty of weapons that can take over a game including Tyler Hansbrough and Wayne Ellington. UNC has also had big performances from Danny Green, Deon Thompson and Ed Davis, making them a very difficult team to defend.
Tip off for Monday night’s game between the North Carolina Tar Heels and Michigan State Spartans is set for 9:21 p.m. ET.
