Michael Jordan, David Robinson and John Stockton Head Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2009

Michael Jordan, David Robinson and John Stockton will be heading a five-member class into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in September following an announcement from Detroit on Monday.

Jordan’s selection was never in doubt as the former Chicago Bulls star dominated the court unlike any other of his generation. Considered by many to be the greatest basketball player of all time Jordan collected five MVP awards, won ten NBA scoring titles, six NBA titles, Defensive Player of the Year honors and collected numerous awards as a North Carolina Tar Heel under Dean Smith. Jordan ended his career with 32,292 points (third all-time), 6,672 rebounds and 5,633 assists.

Robinson had a standout career with Navy prior to his work in the NBA as he earned Player of the Year honors in 1987 as well as the John R. Wooden Award. During his career as a San Antonio Spur Robinson became one of the most dominant centers in NBA history. He won a pair of NBA title and was awarded the MVP in 1995 as well as earned Defensive Player of the Year in 1992. Robinson finished with 20,790 points, 10,497 rebounds and 2,954 blocks.

Stockton followed a successful four-year run at Gonzaga with one of the finest NBA careers of any point guard in history. While he never captured an NBA title Stockton became the all-time assist leader with 15,806 dimes, scored 19,711 points and collected 3,265 steals (also an NBA record).

Joining Jordan, Robinson and Stockton will be Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan and Rutger’s women’s coach C. Vivian Stringer. Sloan had an NBA career that stretched more than a decade before becoming head coach for Chicago Bulls and eventually the Utah Jazz where he remains today. Stringer is the first NCAA coach to lead three different women’s programs to the Final Four and is the third winningest coach in women’s NCAA history.
