The
death toll following a 6.3-magniutude earthquake in central Italy has climbed
to 150 and that number is expected to rise significantly as rescue efforts
continue.
That
rescue effort includes more than 5,000 workers who are digging through the debris
of fallen building and homes in and around the city of L’Aquila. The earthquake
struck around 3:30 a.m. local time and devastated the area as many people were
caught inside their homes and had no chance to reach safety.
An
estimated 1,500 people were injured by the quake and 30,000-40,000 are said to
be homeless as some towns have been completely wiped out while others have been
damaged so badly that it will be some time before residents will be able to
return.
Search
crews are now working with dogs to try and find survivors buried under the
rubble. Searchers are manually digging through the debris to reach the victims,
fearing any type of machinery may cause more casualties.
While
L’Aquila, about 60 miles northeast of Rome, was said to be the epicenter
Italian officials have said several surrounding towns have been wiped out.
Those towns included Castelnuovo, Fossa, Poggio Picenze, Tormintarte, Totani
and Villa Sant’Angelo.
