U.S.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates has proposed an overall increase to the 2010
defense budget but has also suggested cuts to several weapons programs in an
effort to shift spending goals.
Gates
unveiled a $543 billion budget that placed an emphasis on healthcare funding
for military personnel as well as investments in civilian staffing.
The
defense secretary also proposed an end to the production of the F-22 fighter
jet, a staple of the U.S. defense department since the Cold War. Gates has
suggested a shift to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The proposal to cut the F-22
has worried its manufacturer Lockheed Martin which has said nearly 100,000 jobs
could be at stake if production is cut.
Also
on the chopping block is the construction of the latest presidential
helicopters, the VH-71, which has fallen several years behind schedule.
