NCAA National Championship Scores: North Carolina Tar Heels Capture 5th Title After Knocking Off Michigan State Spartans

Ty Lawson scored 21 points, dished out 6 assists and collected 8 steals, Tyler Hansbrough added 18 points and 7 rebounds and Wayne Ellington finished with 19 points as the North Carolina Tar Heels knocked off the Michigan State Spartans 89-72 on Monday night to capture their fifth national championship in school history.

North Carolina jumped on Michigan State early as they built a 22-7 advantage in the first six minutes with all five starters putting points on the board. That balance continued throughout the half as they used a 10-0 run to push their lead to 34-11 with 9:46 left in the half and the Spartans were clearly overmatched. After Wayne Ellington buried a three-pointer with 4:52 left the Tar Heels had their largest lead of the half at 24 before settling for a 55-34 advantage at the break.

While Michigan State tried to get back in the game in the second half the Tar Heels defense never allowed the Spartans to put together a real run. The Spartans managed to get as close as 15 after Goran Suton hit a three-pointer with 6:13 left and they moved to within 13 following a pair of free-throws from Kalin Lucas a minute later but Lawson took control for the Tar Heels and hit 5-6 from the foul-line over the final 3:36 to ice the game.

As impressive as the Tar Heels offense was it was their defense that set the stage for their win as they forced 21 turnovers in the game which they converted into 28 points.
