Body of Sandra Cantu Found in Suitcase in Pond

The body of a missing California child was found Monday. Tracy police says 8-year-old Sandra Cantu was found in a suitcase in a dairy-farm pond near her home. An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday as the cause of death was not immediately clear.

Authorities found the child’s body Monday after receiving a tip about the dairy farm. Workers on the farm were getting water from the pond when a black suitcase surfaced. Police were contacted and found Sandra’s body inside the suitcase. She was identified by the clothes she wore --  the black leggings and pink Hello Kitty shirt she was wearing when she disappeared March 27.

Tracy police spokesman Tony Sheneman said Sandra’s family is devastated. “They have just experienced the unimaginable,” he said.

Sandra was last seen March 27 after she returned home from school. She kissed her mother and left to play with a friend who lived several houses down. She later left the friends home to go to another friend's home but never arrived. Surveillance footage in the mobile home park shows Sandra skipping and swinging her arms as she walked through the neighborhood.

Police have not identified any suspects in the case. Hundreds of people gathered for a vigil Monday night near Sandra’s home.
