Death Toll from Earthquake in Central Italy Tops 200, Officials Expect Number to Rise

The death toll from Monday’s earthquake in central Italy has topped 200 people and officials expect that number to continue to rise as hopes to uncover survivors begin to wane.

More than 7,000 rescuers have been digging through the fallen debris of buildings and homes, searching for those still trapped. Italian officials have said the rescue efforts would continue for another 48 hours after which time the operation would likely turn into a recovery effort.

At least 207 people are confirmed dead while more than 1,500 were injured as the 6.3-magnitude quake struck L’Aquila early Monday morning. The quake has left at last 17,000 homeless and led to relief agencies setting up tents to shelter those who survived the temblor.

The rescue efforts have been compromised due to the conditions of the buildings. Because most of the buildings have sustained either complete or significant damage they could easily collapse on those looking for victims. The danger was felt on Tuesday as the area was hit by a 4.9-magnitude aftershock.
