Students
in Moldova have stormed the country’s parliament, smashing windows and lighting
furniture on fire in protest over Sunday’s general election results in which the
Communist Party won an overwhelming majority.
Protestors
suggested the elections were fraudulent and took to the streets, eventually
targeting the country’s parliament. Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin has
called the protestors claims of fraud an excuse and has vowed to stabilize the situation
within the county.
Voronin
has met with Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii and leaders of the three main
opposition parties to discuss the events but there has been no word on what
direction those talks have taken.
According
to the results of the election the Communist Party won 50% of the votes while
the Liberal Party collected 13% and the Liberal Democratic Party won 12%
At
least 30 people have been injured in the events that have unfolded since Sunday’s
election
