Vermont Votes to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

Vermont’s House and Senate have voted to legalize same-sex marriage, making them the fourth state to recognize such unions as legal.

While Governor Jim Douglas had vetoed the law when it originally passed he will have no such power following the recent vote as proponents of the measure gained a large enough majority to block such a veto.

The Senate passed the bill 23-5 while the House voted 100-49 in favor of the law. Same-sex marriage will now become legal on September 1 in the state.

Vermont will now join Connecticut, Iowa and Massachusetts as the only states where same-sex marriage is legal.
