A very rare shark was caught in the Phillippines March 30.
The World Wildlife Fund said a megamouth shark, one of the rarest fishes in the
world with only 40 others known to exist, was accidentally caught by fisherman
off Burias Island.
The 1,100 pound, 13 foot shark died while struggling to
get out of the fisherman’s net. It was taken back to shore and eaten.
The first megamouth shark was discovered in 1976 in
Hawaii. Other megamouths have been sighted in California, Japan, Indonesia,
Australia, South Africa, Mexico, Senegal, Brazil Ecuador, and Taiwan.
The fish is classified in its own family, Megachesmidae. Megamouths
have distinctive rubbery mouths and large heads. They swim with their mouth’s
wide open to filter the water for jellyfish and plankton.
