The Taliban insurgents responsible for shooting down a United States military helicopter on Saturday have been killed in an airstrike in Wardak province, according to U.S. military and NATO officials. NATO said Taliban leader Mullah Mohibullah and the insurgent who “fired the shot associated with” the helicopter crash that killed 30 American soldiers and 8 Afghan personnel died along with several other militants in Tuesday’s air raid.
The strike was carried out using information gathered by Special Operations Forces on the ground. NATO-led ISAF said the soldiers “located Mullah Mohibullah and the shooter after receiving multiple intelligence leads and tips from local citizens.”
"This does not ease our loss, but we must and we will continue to relentlessly pursue the enemy," Gen. John Allen, the commander of American forces in Afghanistan, said at a news conference Wednesday.
The cause of the helicopter crash is still under investigation, but a rocket propelled grenade is believed to have been involved.
