Somali Pirates Seize Danish Ship, American Crew Held Hostage

Somali pirates have seized a large Danish vessel off the coast of Mogadishu and are currently holding its 21-member American crew hostage.

According to reports the pirates attacked the Maersk Alabama overnight while it was passing through the Indian Ocean, about 400 miles off the coast of Mogadishu. The nighttime attack was said to have lasted for nearly five hours and involved three pirate boats.

While several countries have contributed resources to an anti-piracy task force to patrol the waters off the coast of Somalia the pirates have been able to take advantage of miles of open seas to target vulnerable ships.

It is believed all the American hostages are safe and are currently being held, along with the Danish vessel, for ransom
