Moldova’s President Accuses Romania of Instigating Protest Violence

Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin has accused Romania of instigating the protest violence that erupted in his country on Tuesday which led to the storming of the parliament building in the capital city of Chisinau.

Voronin has been quoted saying “We know that certain political forces in Romania are behind this unrest. The Romanian flags fixed on the government buildings in Chisinau attest to this.”

Those flags were placed by the thousands of protesters who took to the streets following the results of Sunday’s elections. The Communist Party secured nearly 50% of the vote, a number that protesters found hard to accept as legitimate.

On Tuesday the protesters stormed the parliament building and destroyed nearly everything inside. Many of the protesters could be seen waving Romanian flags buy Romania’s foreign ministry has denied any involvement in the violence and suggested Moldova was using them as a scapegoat for their own internal problems.

Voronin has since expelled Romania’s ambassador while recalling the Moldovan envoy from Bucharest.

Opposition parties have challenged the legitimacy of the election and have called for the ballots to be recounted or new elections held. The government has shown little sign of accommodating such demands.
