The 21-member U.S. crew of a Danish-owned shipping vessel hijacked by Somali
pirates in the Indian Ocean has reportedly regained control of the ship.
Earlier
this morning pirates seized control of the Maersk Alabama as it was heading to the
Kenyan port of Mombasa to deliver humanitarian aid. Reports suggested that the shipping
vessel had come under attack last night and was under siege for nearly five
hours before the pirates were able to board the vessel.
While
Maersk has not confirmed that the crew had regained control of the vessel the Pentagon
has said they have had communication with the crew and confirmed that the ship
was back in their hands. The crew is said to have one pirate in custody while
another three were said to have jumped from the ship.
