Captain of Shipping Vessel Attacked by Somali Pirates Held Hostage

While the U.S. crew of a ship hijacked by Somali pirates has regained control of the vessel there are new reports that suggest the captain remains held and that talks are now underway to gain his freedom.

The Maersk Alabama, loaded with relief aid, had been traveling through the Indian Ocean en route to the Kenyan port of Mombasa when it was attacked by the pirates. After a five-hour attack the pirates finally boarded the vessel but soon after the crew managed to regain control of the ship.

It is believed the 20-member U.S. crew has a pirate in custody while three other pirates were believed to have jumped from the ship. According to an AP report it is believed that while the Maersk is back in the hands of the Americans the ship’s captain is currently being held by pirates in a lifeboat.
