Five Afghan police officers and 5 NATO soldiers died in two separate attacks Thursday in southern Afghanistan. Officials in Helmand province say the Afghan police officers died when Taliban insurgents attacked their police post in Gereshk overnight. The five NATO soldiers were killed by an improvised explosive device. Details on the attack, including the location and nationalities of the soldiers, have not been released.
Meanwhile, U.S. military and NATO officials announced yesterday that the Taliban insurgents responsible for last Saturday’s helicopter crash that killed 30 American soldiers and 8 Afghan personnel died Tuesday in an airstrike in Wardak province. NATO said Taliban leader Mullah Mohibullah and the insurgent who “fired the shot associated with” the helicopter crash were located by Special Operations Forces using information from local citizens.
"This does not ease our loss, but we must and we will continue to relentlessly pursue the enemy," Gen. John Allen, the commander of American forces in Afghanistan, said at a news conference.
The cause of the helicopter crash is still under investigation, but a rocket propelled grenade is believed to have been involved.
