FBI
hostage negotiators are now involved in trying to secure the release of U.S.
Capt. Richard Phillips who is now being held by Somali pirates after the failed
hijacking of the Maersk Alabama.
Phillips
is currently being held in a lifeboat off the coast of Somalia and it is
rumored that the boat is out of gas. The pirates have demanded a ransom for
Phillips as well as the compensation for one of their boats that sank in their
attack. Pirates have also demanded that a U.S. warship that is in the area
withdraw.
Phillips
was captaining the Maersk Alabama as it was making its way through the Indian
Ocean destined to deliver food aid to the Kenyan port of Mombasa. It fell under
attack from a number of pirates early Wednesday morning and after a five-hour ordeal
eventually fell into their hands.
Shortly
after the pirates took control the 20-member U.S. crew regained control of the ship
but at least three of the pirates were able to flee with Phillips as a hostage.
Now
negotiations are said to be under way to secure Phillips release but
communication with the pirates has been difficult.
