More
than 50,000 Georgian citizens have rallied outside parliament in Tbilisi, demanding
President Mikhail Saakashvili resign.
Protestors
have accused Saakashvili of limiting democracy in the former Russian republic
and have blamed him for their defeat at the hands of Russia in last year’s war.
Saakashvili
was speaking at a ceremony in Tbilisi to commemorate an event 20 years ago in
which 20 people were killed by the Soviet Red Army during a protest in the city.
Those who oppose Saakashvili took the opportunity to mark the day by organizing
a massive protest against his leadership.
The
government has not attempted to break up the demonstrations and have said they
would respect their right to protest but would security forces would be ready
if necessary.
