The
Los Angeles Angels have postponed their game with the Oakland Athletics on
Thursday following the news of rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart’s death earlier in the
morning.
Adenhart
pitched six strong innings against the Athletics on Wednesday night and left the
game with a 3-0 lead. After leaving the park after the game Adenhart was
travelling with three other people in a Mitsubishi convertible shortly after
midnight when a drunk driver ran a red light at a Fullerton intersection and struck
their vehicle.
The
22-year-old Adenhart was killed as were two others in the vehicle and the fourth
was said to be in critical condition. Police have arrested the driver of the minivan
who attempted to flee the scene and ithas been reported that his blood-alcohol
level was above the legal limit at the time of the accident.
Adenhart
was considered the Angels top pitching prospect and while L.A. wanted to keep
him in AAA for awhile he had been on the major league roster to fill in for a
depleted staff.
While
Thursday’s game between the Angels and Athletics has been postponed the two
teams are believed to be meeting at some point during the day.
