A
U.S. military jury has acquitted Marine Sgt. Ryan Weemer of killing an unarmed
detainee while in Iraq after determining there was a lack of evidence in the case.
Weemer
had allegedly confessed to the 2004 murder during an interview for a position
with the Secret Service. As part of that 2006 interview Weemer was administered
a polygraph test during which he admitted to murdered the detainee.
That
admission led to a criminal investigation in which Weemer was facing life in prison
and a dishonorable discharge. His defense team argued that because there was no
body and that no family had come forward complaining of the disappearance of a
relative there was no evidence to convict the former Marine.
The
court-martial was held at Camp Pendleton in California where the jury,
comprised of eight Marines, cleared the 26-year-old of all charges.
