2009 Masters Score Board Day One: Chad Campbell Tops Leader Board with 7-under 65, Tiger Woods Sitting at 2-under 70

The 2009 Masters at Augusta National began on Thursday and it was a brilliant day for the world’s best golfers as favorable course conditions produced some tremendous scores.

For Chad Campbell it will be a day to remember as the 34-year-old opened with five straight birdies and then birdied 12, 13, 14 and 15 putting him on pace to challenge the record low for a round at Augusta, Nick Price and Greg Norman each produced a round of 63 in 1986 and 1996 respectively.

Unfortunately for Campbell his chase ended with a pair of bogies to close the day but he managed to finish the day with a 7-under 65 to head into Day Two atop the leader board.

Sitting one stroke behind Campbell after 18 holes are the duo of Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan who each fired rounds of 6-under 66. Furyk managed to get through his round bogy-free, the only golfer to achieve that feat, and sank birdies on 14, 15 16 and 17 to head into Day Two with some momentum. For Mahan the day included nine birdies but a double-bogey on 11 and a bogey on 18 left him one back.

Larry Mize turned back the clock and shot a 5-under 67 on Thursday to hold a tie for fourth. The 1987 Masters winner hit six birdies on the day while knocking a bogey on the fourth hole. Mize is tied with Japan’s Shingo Katayama who bounced back from a bogey on 17 to hole a birdie on 18 for a solid 5-under.

For the first time since 2000 Tiger Woods completed his first round at the Masters under par and it took the four-time Green Jacket winner some time to get going as he sat even through 12 before sinking birdies on 13, 14 and 15 to move 3-under. Woods had a solid shot for birdie on 16 but hit his short put wide of the cup and had to settle for a par. On 17 Woods had another great shot at birdie but his put was a bit too hard and rimmed out and had to settle for another par. Those two missed opportunities really cost him on 18 as he hit his first bogey since 6 and left him at 2-under 70 heading into Friday.

That 70 might not bother Woods too much as the last three times he started his Masters with that score he went on to win the Green Jacket.

Last year’s winner Trevor Immelman had to fight back from a rough opening eight that included four bogies but he closed his day with birdies on 13, 14 and 15 before settling for a par on his final three holes to finish the day at a 1-under 71.
