The
U.S. captain currently held hostage by a group of Somali pirates reportedly
made an effort to escape his captors late Thursday night but was recaptured and
remains in their custody.
Capt.
Richard Phillips was navigating the Maersk Alabama through the Indian Ocean
with his 20-member crew when their vessel was attacked by a group of pirates
early Wednesday morning. After a five-hour battle the pirates managed to take
control of the ship but a short time later the U.S. crew was able to regain
control but at least four pirates escaped to a lifeboat and took Phillips with
them.
That
lifeboat is believed to be dead in the water, having run out of gas and has since
been shadowed by the U.S. destroyer USS Bainbridge. Negotiations are underway
to secure the release of Phillips but on Thursday night the captain made his
own move as he jumped from the lifeboat and attempted to swim to the destroyer.
The
Somali pirates managed to recapture Phillips shortly after his attempt but he
is believed to be in good condition and talks have continued. The Pirates are believed
to want compensation for a boat destroyed during their attack as well as a
ransom for Phillips’ release.
