President
Abdelaziz Bouteflika has won his third consecutive term as Algeria’s leader
after collecting just over 90% of the vote in Thursday’s elections. In 2008
Bouteflika had the country’s constitution changed so that he could run for a
third five-year term.
Bouteflika’s
closest competition came from Louisa Hanoune of the Trotskyist Workers’ Party who
managed to win just 4.22% of the vote. While several opposition parties opted
to boycott the elections Bouteflika’s win was considered a near certainty
regardless.
The
72-year-old Bouteflika pledged to create more than three million jobs and spend
$150 billion on development projects
