Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika Wins Third Term in Landslide Election

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has won his third consecutive term as Algeria’s leader after collecting just over 90% of the vote in Thursday’s elections. In 2008 Bouteflika had the country’s constitution changed so that he could run for a third five-year term.

 

Bouteflika’s closest competition came from Louisa Hanoune of the Trotskyist Workers’ Party who managed to win just 4.22% of the vote. While several opposition parties opted to boycott the elections Bouteflika’s win was considered a near certainty regardless.

 

The 72-year-old Bouteflika pledged to create more than three million jobs and spend $150 billion on development projects
