State Funeral Held for 205 Killed in Italian Earthquake

Thousands of people attended an open-aired state funeral just outside the Italian city of L’Aquila, marking a day of mourning for the 289 killed in Monday’s 6.3-magnitude earthquake in the Abruzzo region.

The state funeral was for 205 of those victims and many of the country’s top politicians, including President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, as well as family members of the dead were in attendance for the Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of L'Aquila, Giuseppe Molinari.

To hold the Mass the Vatican granted a special dispensation as Good Friday is the only day of the year in which Catholics do not celebrate Mass.

Central Italy has continued to feel aftershocks following Monday’s deadly quake and many of those aftershocks have hampered search efforts for those buried under the collapsed buildings and homes. Many of the 28,000 left homeless as a result of the earthquake are now staying in camps set up by relief agencies.
