French Hostage Killed, Four Freed Following Rescue Operation Off Somali Coast

The hostage situation involving two French families aboard a yacht off the coast of Somalia has ended after French troops launched a rescue operation.

One of the hostages aboard the yacht was killed while two pirates were also said to have been casualties in the operation. The French troops are said to be holding three other pirates in custody while four hostages were freed and unharmed.

It was last week when Somali pirates seized the yacht, Tanit, and after six days of negotiations French troops put into operation their rescue effort. That rescue operation was only launched after the negotiations failed to produce any action and it became apparent that the pirates were willing to harm the hostages.

There has been no word if the hostage had been killed prior to the French troops taking action or if they were killed during the operation.
