After
Day One at the 2009 Masters it was clear that it was the golfers who controlled
the course as scores in the 60s were scattered across the leader board but on
Day Two it became evident that Augusta National was ready to take back
everything it gave on Thursday as golfers struggled to repeat their magic.
That
didn’t appear to be the case for Chad Campbell as the 34-year-old attacked the opening
ten holes and was sitting 4-under on the day and 11-under for the Masters. It all
changed on 11 as he hit bogey and then followed with a double-bogey on the par
3, 12th. Campbell managed to par the next four holes but found
trouble on 17 for the second straight day and settled for bogey. Fortunately
for Campbell he saved his day with a birdie on 18, a hole that he bogied on
Thursday and finished 2-under 70 on the day and holds a two-stroke lead over the
fast approaching Kenny Perry.
Perry
was sitting three-strokes back when the day began after firing a 4-under 68 on
Thursday and through 15 on Friday he was 4-under on the day and one-stroke behind
Campbell.
Todd
Hamilton finished his day 2-under 70 and is now sitting three strokes behind
Campbell heading into the weekend. Jim Furyk is now 1-over after three holes on
Friday and sits 5-under for the tournament. Furyk’s 6-under on Thursday was
matched by Hunter Mahan but Friday was a different story for the 27-year-old as
he was at 3-over through 17.
Of
course all eyes remain fixed on Tiger Woods and after a 2-under 70 on Thursday
he sits even after 13 holes on Friday and is tied for tenth on the leader
board. Woods put together a birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey on 6, 7, 8 and 9 and
could still shave a few strokes over the final five holes to climb even closer.
After
a brilliant opening round in which he fired a 5-under 67 Larry Mize found
nothing amusing about Friday as he was four-over, erasing just about everything
he did on Thursday and after 36 holes he is sitting on a 1-under 143, tied for
22nd. Mize wasn’t the only one frustrated on Friday as Trevor
Immelman, last year’s Green Jacket winner, was 3-over on the day after 13 and
was below the projected cut-line.
