Police Arrest Sunday School Teacher in Sandra Cantu Murder

California police have arrested a 28-year-old Sunday school teacher on suspicion of kidnapping and killing 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.

According to police reports Melissa Huckaby was arrested after about five hours of questioning on Friday. Huckaby is currently being held without bail at the San Joaquin County Jail in California, her arraignment has been set for Tuesday.

Police announced the arrest early Saturday morning after determining there was probable cause but they did not provide a motive. Focus turned to Huckaby after interviews she gave revealed inconsistencies.

Sandra Cantu disappeared on March 27 and an intense search was launched but it wasn’t until April 6 that her body was found stuffed in a suitcase that had been submerged in an irrigation pond. Huckaby admitted to police that the suitcase belonged to her but said the piece of luggage had been stolen from her driveway the same day Cantu disappeared.

Huckaby is the granddaughter of the pastor at Clover Road Baptist Church, a main focus of the police investigation early in the search.
