A polar bear at Berlin Zoo attacked a woman after she
climbed over a fence and jumped into a pond in the animal’s enclosure. According
to reports, a woman, who has not been identified, plunged into the pond during
feeding time and began “enthusiastically” swimming towards the bears.
One adult polar bear bit her several times. Zoo workers
tossed rescue rings to the woman and attempted to hoist her out of the moat. Other
workers attempted to distract the bears swimming nearby. At one point, the
woman fell from a rope and back in the water. A bear bit her as workers tried
to hoist her back up.
“They saved her life,” Berlin police officer Goerg
Gebhard says of the zoo workers.
It is unclear why the woman jumped in to the enclosure. She
was issued a citation for trespassing. She is being treated at a nearby
hospital for severe injuries.
The Berlin Zoo is known for their polar bear, Knut. Knut
became famous after his birth in December 2006 as he was the first polar bear
to be born there in over 30 years.
