Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu Prepared to Resume Peace Talks with Palestinian Leader Mahmoud Abbas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas that he is prepared to resume talks that could result in a lasting peace.

Netanyahu and Abbas spoke briefly during a telephone conversation that was described as “friendly and warm” by the PM’s office. It was during that conversation that Netanyahu expressed his intention to resume talks but he did not address the creation of an independent Palestinian state, a fundamental demand of the Palestinians.

The creation of a Palestinian state has long been a sticking point to any lasting peace talks and Netanyahu’s right-leaning coalition has shown no sign of letting up on their opposition to such a concession.

Netanyahu took office on March 31 after gaining enough support from center-left, center-right and far right parties to form a coalition. His appointment of Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, as Foreign Minister drew some criticism because the right-winger has adamantly opposed any talks of a Palestinian state.
