The 2009 Masters finished in dramatic style on Sunday as Angel Cabrera managed to capitalize on a collapse by Kenny Perry to win his first Green Jack at Augusta National. Cabrera’s win came on the second playoff hole after he managed to par the first playoff hole following a disastrous drive that neither Kenny Perry or Chad Campbell could exploit.
As the day unfolded it didn’t look like Cabrera, Perry or Campbell would be in position for the Green Jacket as Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods carved up the course and closed a seven stroke deficit with relative ease.
Mickelson birdied six of his first eight holes to go 10-under for the tournament and was one-stroke behind Perry but a double-bogey on 12 pushed him back and after missing eagle opportunities on 13 and 15 he bogied 18 to finish with a 5-under 67 and 9-under for the tournament.
Tiger took a bit longer to get going but an eagle on the eighth hole put him at 3-under for the day and then he struck birdies on 13, 15 and 16 to reach 10-under but fell apart on 17 and 18, settling for bogies on each to finish his tournament at 8-under and tied for sixth.
It truly looked like it was Perry’s Green Jacket to win as he went into 17 with a two stroke lead but a bogie opened the door for Cabrera to cut his deficit to one stroke as the Argentinean struck par. While that was going on Campbell was finishing his day with a par at 18 to hold at 12-under for the tournament. Perry still had a chance to wrap up the Masters on 18 as he had the one stroke lead over Cabrera and Campbell but once again he failed to shut the door and his bogie left him tied with Campbell and Cabrera who managed to hit par on 18.
Cabrera nearly played his way out of the Masters on the first playoff hole at 18 as he found himself behind a tree after a poor drive but both Perry and Campbell had awful second shots that allowed Cabrera to work his way back. Perry had a great third shot that set up an easy tap in for par and Campbell’s third shot left him with a four-foot par that would have kept him even but he left it wide and his day was done. Cabrera saved his tournament with a solid third shot that left him six-feet from the cup and he sank the put to force a second playoff hole with Perry.
Both Cabrera and Perry played conservative on their drives but then Perry’s second shot left him wide of the green while Cabrera’s second shot put him 18-feet from the hole. Perry then over struck on his third shot that left him staring at a long put that he failed to sink on his fourth shot. Cabrera need to two-putt to win and after his third shot fell within inches of the cup he tapped in on his fourth for a par and the win.
