Turkish
officials have arrested 12 people suspected of plotting to overthrow the government;
all those detained have denied the charges and claim the allegations are
politically motivated.
Among
those arrested was Mehmet Haberal, the president of Ankara’s Basknet University
and owner of Kanal B television station. Haberal has been an outspoken critic
of the ruling AK Party and has organized meetings with several of its opponents
over the past few months.
Those
detained are said to be part of a push to form a new, more secular, political movement.
That push has been part of the ultra-nationalist Ergenekon network which counts
academics, journalists and politicians among its members.
The
government has blamed Ergenekon for being part of several violent attacks over the
past few years, attacks that were carried out in hopes of spurring a coup.
