Plane Carrying U.S. Congressman Donald Payne Comes Under Attack by Somali Insurgents

U.S. congressman Donald Payne narrowly escaped an attack launched by Somali insurgents as his plane left Mogadishu on Monday.

Payne had been in Mogadishu to speak with Somali leaders including President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke about implementing programs that would aid the war-torn country.

Shortly after the meeting ended Payne returned to the international airport when a mortar struck just prior to his departure. Another five mortars hit the airport after the plane had taken off, there were no casualties reported but there were three people wounded when one of the mortars fired struck a nearby neighborhood.

Payne, 74, is chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s subcommittee on African and global health.
