U.S.
congressman Donald Payne narrowly escaped an attack launched by Somali
insurgents as his plane left Mogadishu on Monday.
Payne
had been in Mogadishu to speak with Somali leaders including President Sheikh
Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke about implementing
programs that would aid the war-torn country.
Shortly
after the meeting ended Payne returned to the international airport when a
mortar struck just prior to his departure. Another five mortars hit the airport
after the plane had taken off, there were no casualties reported but there were
three people wounded when one of the mortars fired struck a nearby
neighborhood.
Payne,
74, is chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s subcommittee on
African and global health.
