Dyngus Day, the day after Easter Sunday, will be commemorated on Monday, April 13, 2009. The day, which officially marks the end of Lent, is often celebrated as its own holiday in several Christian cultures, especially Catholics.
In Poland and several parts of the United States, Easter Monday is referred to as Dyngus Day. Dyngus Day celebrations are prominent in Buffalo, New York and South Bend, Indiana, the home of the University of Notre Dame, one of the nation's most prestigious Catholic universities.
Buffalo celebrates Dyngus Day primarily due to its large Polish-American population. The World's Largest Dyngus Day Parade, which goes through Buffalo's historic Polonia District, was inaugurated in 2006.
In South Bend, Dyngus Day, also referred to as Wet Monday, marks the first day of the political primary season, especially for Democrats, which are involved through the West Side Democratic Club.
In other parts of the United States, Chicago, Illinois, Wyandotte, Michigan, Hamtramck, Michigan, and La Porte, Indiana also hold Dyngus Day celebrations.
