Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison cashed in on his amazing 2008 season by signing a new six-year, $51.18 million contract Monday.
Harrison was named the 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and his 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in Super Bowl XL helped the Steelers win their second championship in five years. The return was the longest-scoring play in Super Bowl history.
Harrison was scheduled to make $1.4 million this season, the final year of his contract. In his new contract, which will be officially announced Tuesday, Harrison will earn about $20 million in bonuses.
The contract makes Harrison the second-highest paid player in team history after quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. His $20 million bonus is also second in team history behind Roethlisberger, who signed a $102 million, eight-year contract last year that will pay him a guaranteed $36 million.
In 2008, Harrison was named First Team All-Pro and recorded 16 sacks in 15 regular-season games, third in the NFL for a linebacker behind DeMarcus Ware (Cowboys) and Joey Porter (Dolphins). In 2007, he had 8.5 sacks. Harrison earned the starting outside linebacker position after Porter left the team and has recorded 199 tackles in his last two seasons.
Harrison led a linebacking corps that consisted of LaMarr Woodley, James Farrior and Larry Foote, who are considered the best corps in the NFL. They helped lead the Steelers to the best defense in the league, ranking first in scoring defense, total defense, passing defense, and second in rushing defense.
