Somali Pirates Hijack Fourth Vessel in Two Days

Somali pirates have reacted to the deadly encounter with the U.S. Navy by hijacking their fourth vessel in two days, heightening the tension that already exists in the Gulf of Aden.

The most recent vessel, a Lebanese-owned cargo ship sailing under the Togo flag, was snagged on Tuesday. The MV Sea Horse was attacked by at least four skiffs carrying pirates as it passed by the coast of Somalia.

Pirates had earlier seized the Greek-owned MV Irene, carrying a crew of 22, in the Gulf of Aden and on Monday they hijacked a pair of Egyptian fishing boats.

Somali pirates have vowed to avenge the deaths of the three who were killed by the U.S. Navy on Sunday following a hostage standoff. The pirates had been holding U.S. shipping Capt. Richard Phillips on a lifeboat while trying to negotiate a ransom. When Navy sharpshooters had a clear shot at the pirates they killed all three and managed to rescue Phillips unharmed.
