North Korea Ends Nuclear Talks Following Criticism from UN Security Council, Vows to Restore Reactor

After hearing harsh criticism from the UN Security Council concerning their recent rocket launch North Korea has halted talks surrounding their nuclear program and has now vowed to restore its disabled nuclear reactor.

The international talks involve South Korea, Japan, the United States, Russia, China and North Korea and while those involved have expressed hope at reaching a resolution the talks have experienced numerous setbacks since they began five years ago.

North Korea’s recent decision to launch a rocket, which they claim to be part of a peaceful space program, drew condemnation from the international community. Most believe that the rocket launch was a long-range missile test and Japan has since extended economic sanctions against North Korea for another year.

Following the criticism and accusations surrounding their rocket launch North Korea has said they will no longer participate in talks, calling the UN’s actions an insult. North Korea’s Foreign Ministry has vowed to “strengthen its nuclear deterrent for its defense by all means.”

That will now include the restoration of their partially disabled Yongbyon nuclear reactor, a plant that had been partially disabled in 2008 as part of an agreement to receive aid.

Both Russia and China have encouraged North Korea to return to international talks.
