Oscar
De La Hoya, the 1992 Olympic gold medal winner and highest grossing boxer in the
history of the sport, has announced his retirement from boxing.
The
36-year-old compiled a 39-6 record over his career and collected world titles in
six different weight divisions but it was his final fight that signaled an end
to his reign. De La Hoya was badly beaten by a much younger Manny Pacquiao in
December which led to talks about his imminent retirement.
Over
his distinguished career inside the ring De La Hoya won ten world titles while
beating 17 world champions.
De
La Hoya turned professional in 1992 following the Barcelona Olympics and remained
unbeaten for nearly seven years before falling to Felix Trinidad for the WBC
and IBF welterweight title In 1999. He would go on to lose to Shane Mosley two
fights later in 2000. He would lose his rematch with Mosley three years later,
a fight that began a stretch of four losses in seven fights, ending with
Pacquiao.
