Three Men Held in Ukraine after Allegedly Trying to Sell Radioactive Material

A politician and two businessmen are currently being held in Ukraine after allegedly attempting to sell radioactive material that could be used to construct a “dirty bomb.”

The three men have been detained since April 9 after attempting to sell what has been described by the SBU security service as more than eight pounds of plutonium-239. It is believed the price tag on the radioactive material was $10 million.

Further investigation into the material revealed that it was not plutonium-239 but its exact nature has not been revealed. There have been reports that it may have been americium, a synthetic radioactive element that carries a number of industrial uses and is not considered a likely choice for weapons material.

The three men have since been charged with illegally handling radioactive material.
