Pirates Attack U.S. Merchant Ship Liberty Sun Off Coast of Somalia

Somali pirates, using grenades and automatic weapons, have attacked a U.S. merchant ship carrying a cargo of food aid but were unable to board the vessel.

The attack on the Liberty Sun took place on Tuesday as it was sailing off the coast of Somalia en route to Mombasa. According to reports the crew immediately contacted the U.S. warship USS Bainbridge for assistance, the same ship that assisted in securing the freedom of Capt. Richard Phillips after he was taken hostage by pirates last week.

In that incident Phillips was held hostage in a lifeboat by three pirates during negotiation talks. On Sunday U.S. Navy sharpshooters killed all three pirates and rescued Phillips. Somali pirates have since vowed to avenge the deaths and have upped their attacks in the area, recently seizing four more vessels.

While the Liberty Sun requested help from the USS Bainbridge by the time the warship arrived the pirates had abandoned their attempts.
