NATO’s
planned military exercises next month in the former Soviet republic of Georgia
has angered Russia who has requested the plans to be scrapped, calling them “absurd
and a provocation.”
Russia
was involved in a bitter conflict with Georgia last year after trouble broke in
the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. NATO has said the planned
military exercises had been scheduled prior to the conflict yet Russia has
called the actions a threat to its security.
The
NATO exercises are scheduled to take place just east of Georgia’s capital
Tbilisi from May 6 to June1 and while it is intended to be “non-aggressive”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, “To hold military exercises in a
country where a war has just ended is impossible.”
Russia
has accused Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili of attempting to use the NATO
exercises as a way to gain support in the country. Saakashvili has been heavily
criticized in Georgia for his mishandling of the crisis with Russia and recent
protests have signaled a possible end to his time as the country’s leader.
